About We Belong

What is We Belong?

“We Belong” is a program for people with disability to help support their inclusion in their community, sporting activities and hobbies. We Belong allows people with disability to share their stories and experiences using video, podcast, blogs, articles and presentations.

Co-designed with people with disability, We Belong encourages individuals to talk about the barriers or challenges they have in joining groups or activities. By learning from past experiences, We Belong focuses on people’s strength to build confidence, develop life skills and feel connected to their community.

We Belong also works with the wider community. Flagstaff partners with local groups to better understand barriers that may exist in the community and workplaces. Together, we provide support and share resources to help make art, sport, culture or recreational spaces welcoming and inclusive for people with disability.

With 60 years of experience, Flagstaff can help to:

  • Start conversations about disability awareness.
  • Improve accessibility in community and workplace settings.
  • Create welcoming and inclusive environments for all to join.

Top tips for creating a welcoming and inclusive environment

  1. See the person, not their disability.
  2. Treat everyone with respect, dignity and equality.
  3. Speak directly to the person and maintain eye contact.
  4. Refer to the person first, not their disability. Reflect on their individuality and humanity, not their condition.
  5. Choose inclusive language and avoid stereotypes or labels that diminish a person.
